In a 13 team NL only Keeper (15 max) league 23 player $260 budget 5x5 league.
Would you trade John Smoltz $21 2nd year for Ryan Freel $3 3rd year?
My pitchers are (*keepers)
*John Smoltz $21 2nd yr
*John Patterson $2 (will extend him to 2 years at $7)
*Derrick Turnbow $2 2nd yr
*Armando Benitez $26 3rd yr
*Tomo Ohka $6 3rd yr
*Cory Lidle $1 3rd yr
Shawn Estes $2 2nd yr
Jeff Weaver $12 3rd yr
Gary Majewksi $10 2nd yr
Luke Hudson $1 2nd yr
Jason Vargas $10 2nd yr
I would probably keep Weaver if he signs in the NL. I might keep Estes since he will be pitching in Petco.
My Batters are
*Bobby Abreu $32 3rd yr
*Barry Bonds $22 2nd yr
*Yadier Molina $4 2nd yr
*Mike Matheny $4 3rd yr
*David Bell $3 3rd yr
*Brad Hawpe $10 3rd yr
*Chris Duffy $10 2nd yr
Omar Quintanilla $2 2nd yr
Jason Werth $5 2nd yr
Luis Terrero $3 2nd yr
Luis Gonzalez (Ari) 24 2nd yr
Wilson Betemit $6 2nd yr
Lance Niekro $10 2nd yr
I might keep Quintanilla, Werth or Niekro. I am concerned about Smoltz getting injured due to the extra innings from starting. I think Freel will be the starter at second in Cincy or perhaps left if Kearns gets traded. I am also not sure I would keep Abreu with all the trade rumors floating around about him. Any thoughts would be appreciated about the trade or about the players/keepers I have listed.
Thank you in advance for your assisitance.

I think that losing Smoltz makes your starting pitching awfully weak. Are there any high-end free agent pitchers that you know you will get a shot at?
Freel does not overly excite me (I know others disagree) and I am willing to bet Smoltz puts up another solid year.

I just traded smoltz vice keeping him in keeper league (have Sheets).
In your case, I don't think I would pull the trigger.
I agree with OgreChow in that I'm just not a big Freel fan and think with your other pitchers, that you really need to hang onto Smoltz.

| Dontrelle Willis, Carlos Zambrano, Aaron Harang and Brandon Webb are going to be available, Jake Peavy $33, Tim Hudson $27, Jason Schmidt $26 and Roger Clemens $27 would probably not be kept at those salaries. Freel's owner also has Pedro Martinez at $27 and we had been discussing an Abreu and a player for Freel and Pedro.

I know he's pretty expensive at $21, but I'd still keep Smoltz. Reliable starting pitching is that hard to come by...yes, three or four good starters would become available in your auction, but would the eighteen bucks you save here buy any of them? Perhaps... but unless you see enough starting pitching to make this a major upgrade along the Peavy/Martinez vein, keep Smoltz and let someone else retain a marginal player like Freel.
It's all about asset allocation... and sometimes a solid player is worth more than the extra auction cash.

Reliable....Smoltz the 39yo pitcher. With the bum shoulder? Over Freel at $3. I would take my chances wirh Freel and use the money to get a different starter....
