I just joined into a keeper league as an expansion team.  There were 12 teams and they're expanding to 16.  The way they're doing it is the 12 current teams keep their starting rosters (QB, RB, WR, RB/WR, TE, K, D) and the rest of the players are dropped.  There is then a 7 round expansion draft for the 4 new teams, followed by a regular draft to fill out the benches.  We're able to trade our expansion picks to the current teams, so I quickly started putting out offers, seeing what kind of value I could get.

I traded my 1st and 7th picks in the expansion draft for Ronnie Brown and a 3rd round pick in the regular draft.

I then traded my 2nd round expansion pick for Maurice Jones-Drew and my 3rd round expansion pick for Lee Evans.

We can keep players for as many years as we want, so I figured I made a killing here since both Brown and Drew should probably be going in the first two rounds if we picked from the entire player pool, let alone picking from last year's benches, and Evans isn't a slouch, either.

Anyways, since the trades I've had several people calling me an idiot and questioning my thinking on their message board.  I've even had people tell me I don't understand what's going on with these expansion picks.  As far as I can tell, I made an absolute killing here.

I was just wondering if someone had an informed opinion.  Could I be missing something?  The scoring system seems pretty standard.

I don't see the big problem. You gave away four of your expansion selections - but got back Ronnie Brown, Maurice Jones-Drew, Lee Evans and a 3rd round regular pick. It's hard to know exactly who's available in the expansion rounds, but unless there are much better players, I can see the direction you're going in. There will be at least 9 players taken off the board in the expansion draft by the other three expansion teams before you can select another player, but there are 84 keepers (12x7) in your league. Given that, I'd rather take the players you have than worry about getting picks in the first three rounds of the expansion draft (which would be ranked overall 85-88; 89-92; and 93-96). It sure seems like the three players you got should be better than anything you could do in those slots.

you're smart. Don't let them tell you otherwise. Getting those players is golden. If 12 teams keep their starting rosters, I would've thought you would be lucky to get Ron Dayne or some scrubtacular player like that.

Bill Hall vs. Alex Rios ESPN player rater (Lloydy, BStone, Random33 $20 a piece) I got Hall.
AJ Burnett will get over 180IP and under 3.9ERA and 1.3 WHIP... I take Burnett doing it, Adam doesn't ($20)

You did well - you filled three of your starting slots - and can now look for a QB or TE with your first expansion pick. Anyone who is hating on you probobly had his own trade proposals turned down, or is sitting back and seeing what happens. Usually the biggest "mouth" out there is a guy who wants what you just obtained - I check out that angle. But keep it up - the deck is stacked against you this year - but this is a great first step.

You shouldn't be able to get Ronnie Brown in an expansion draft, so you owned that pick and MJD is a stud in waiting. Those people are the fools. Don't sweat it.

Hey, thanks for the advice.

Just to update, I've since picked up Matt Leinart with my 5th round expansion pick to play QB and Heath Miller for a pick in the regular draft, so my team is rounding out pretty nicely, IMO, considering I thought I'd be settling on the Leon Washington's and Michael Clayton's of the world.

Hey Potsie,

Great job on those deals.  I, for one, would be interested to see how your starting lineup compares to the other expansion teams starting lineups.
