So I'm in this 10 team, 5x5 mixed league.  I'm doing well in all the cats (6 or more) except for ERA where I'm carrying a 2.  My team ERA is 4.34.  (Ugh.)  I've been thinking that in order to gain ground in this cat, I need to get a topflight pitcher to help me out in the second half.  My question is, will it be worth it?  The guy who has a 5 in ERA is at 3.83.  So I need to shave about a 1/2 a run off my ERA to even get to 5.  (At least currently.)  I could get Jake Peavy for David Wright.  The deal is Peavy and Willingham for Wright and Granderson.  Here's my roster:
  • C - Napoli
  • 1B - Howard
  • 2B - Utley
  • 3B - Wright
  • SS - Harris
  • MI - Roberts
  • CI - Pena
  • OF - Lee, Bay, Cuddyer, Granderson, Hart
  • U - Gomes
  • Bench - Lugo, Pie, Sexson, Gathright

Pitchers:

  • SP - Hamels, Bonderman, Harang, Lincecum, Gallardo, Germano
  • RP - Valverde, Gregg, Ray, Bell
  • DL - Guardado, Unit

I'd replace Wright with Beltre or Mora or whoever was hot and available.  Would I be better off trading Utley since I could slot Roberts in as my 2B?  Should I just stay with what I have and hope for the best?  Sorry for the lengthy post, but I figure this is the trade that will either make or break my team.  Thanks!

You already have 2 top starters in Hamels and Bonderman, if you are doing well in WHIP but struggling in ERA chances are your ERA is due for a correction.  I don't like trading Wright with the options you have to replace him, but you do have some MI depth you can deal, I would see what sort of starter you can get for Roberts.

i don't like the deal as is since losing Wright is too significant in this one.  i do agree w/ dub that shopping Roberts for a SP is a better route to go.  that's what i'd do too

What do you guys think about James Shields?  Think he can keep pitching like this all season?  The guy in my league that has him is weak in steals but has lots of good SPs - Shields, Kazmir, Hill, Pettitte, Buerhle, the King and Gorzelanny.  Maybe one of those guys?

i'm quite high on Shields and i'd offer Roberts for him and be pleased but many would probably tell you that you'd be offering too much for him

I do not like trading wright for peavy since lugo would take wrights spot at 3b.  In a 10 team leauge i dont think lugo is worth owning unless you are REALLY in need of speed.  He just isnt worth it.

And jeremy bonderman is NOT a stud pitcher- he is the AL version of brad penny:

bonderman in 2k6 after the allstar break 4.87 ERA. 1.49 whip

bonderman in 2k5 after the allstar break 5.61 ERA 1.58 whip.

also penny has much better career numbers  bonderman in his career 4.65 ERA and 1.35 whip, penny in his career 3.92 ERA and 1.31 whip.  For some reason people love bonderman and hate penny.  I think bonderman is an EXCELLENT sell high candidate, try packaging him with another player, maybe an outfielder, and trade for a stud pitcher and a weaker OF.

That is your best bet, bonderman in not worth owning in a 10 team league IMO, but people keep saying he is a good fantasy player he isnt, and he never was.  He strikes out a lot of batters and has a sh!tty era and whip.

So my efforts to trade Roberts for pitching haven't really panned out so far.  But I did get an offer of Kelvim Escobar for Corey Hart.  What do you guys think about that?  Kelvim's put it all together this year, but injuries always seem to derail him.  On the other hand, Hart's been playing like a monster, but he can't keep up this pace all year, can he?
