I'm in a deeep 20 team dynasty league (where all players are kept going forward). 25 man rosters. Basically I drafted really poorly and am now looking to accumulate young talent for the future.

I am WAY overloaded with young arms that have potential, but aren't giving me much right now. I have an offer to trade Aaron Hill for Reds prospect Joey Votto and am wondering what kind of impact Votto will have and if anybody is familiar with him or the situation in Cinci. I thought I could add Yunel Escobar from the FA list to replace Hill and drop one of my many SP's to do so, but don't know which one to drop. Also, should I hold on to Doumit from PIT?

C McCann          OF V. Wells            BN T. Pena (SS)

1B Morneau        OF J. Willingham      DL J. Rivera (OF)

2B B. Phillips       OF B. Butler

3B J. Fields         Util Doumit (C/1B/OF)

SS Tulowitzki      Util A. Hill (2B/SS)

SP J. Francis      SP E. Santana         SP B. Bonser

SP S. Mitre        SP B. McCarthy       SP P. Maholm

SP M. Pelfrey     SP J. Bergmann        SP L. Hochevar

SP J.P. Howell

RP T. Hoffman    RP. Z. Greinke          RP G. Sherrill

RP F. Cabrera     DL J. Schmidt          DL. G. Perkins (RP)

Any advice on the trade or my team would be greatly appreciated! thanks.

First off, welcome to the site.  There arent a lot of guys who play 20 team leagues here, but i like the 20 teamers so here goes.

keep aaron hill because you dont really need votto since you have morneau.  I would concentrate on trading for some SP.  Yeah you have young pitchers, but not much talent.

I guess i would try trading ryan doumit to a team that really needs a catcher and has SP to trade.

He keeps hit catcher eligibility next year so that gives him decent value at catcher.

I like joey votto as a prospect, except like i said you have bigger needs than 1b.  Then again, it looks like you are playing for next year, you could try trading off some veterans to a contenters to bring in some decent SP- but still votto isnt your priority.  Guys like paul maholm will likely never pan out, i dont know who is on the WW, but if guys like kyle kendrick or sonnastine are out there, then grab them.  Hell, i would rather have dustin nippert over maholm.  A lot of those guys you have were never even great prospects, they may have made baseball america's top 100,  but maybe half of the guys in BA's top 100 pan out into everyday MLB players.

Most of the top 10 BA prospects are almost a lock, but even now and then there is a jesse foppert or a rick ankiel, top 10 guys who never panned out and never had a mlb career.

To make a long story short, no dont trade hill for votto.  Try to do a massive overhaul your SP(which wont be easy).  If you had targeted different rookie pitchers like homer bailey, tim lincecum, yovani gallardo, or phil hughes, then that would be a different story.  Even better would be to go after second or third year pitchers, hammel, jered weaver, justin verlander etc.

Instead you went after paul maholm, mike pelfrey, etc.  All i can say is live and learn.  I assume evan longoria is long gone?  maybe check for joel guzman?  When i think of hitting prospects, i think of the devilrays.

edit, i do like the picks of troy tulowitski, billy butler and zach greinke- but the rest of the young guys are a bit sketchy.

I haven't heard much about Votto lately, but at the beginning of the season - rather than push Votto to the big leagues after an impressive year at Double-A, the Reds did the opposite, signing Scott Hatteberg to a contract extension that could potentially block Votto through 2008. Votto hit .319 with a .408 OBP and a .547 SLG at AA in 2006. Long term he’s among the best first-base prospects in baseball, but you never know when Cincinnati will have go get another mediocre veteran. I would personally say he is a worthy target for a team like yours which needs to add minor leaguers with upside.
In order to add a replacement 2B, I would drop Bergmann. He is a 2002 11th-round pick, was turned into a full-time reliever during the 2004 season and spent the first few months of 2006 bouncing back and forth between the majors and AAA. The Nationals got desperate enough to try him again as a starter last year. He ended up pitching poorly however he was used, compiling an ERA over 6.5 in six starts plus 34 innings as a reliever. Bergmann has four pitches, but since his changeup isn't very good, his home should be in the bullpen. He’s unlikely to help you much within the next couple of years.
As far as Doumit is concerned, it is hard to tell without knowing your potential options. Doumit is lacking defensively behind the plate, and the Pirates aren’t sure whether he’s an option as a regular at first base or in right field. He has the added handicap of being rather injury prone. He has 20-homer power though, and he batted .281 in 160 at-bats after the All-Star break two years ago, so there is some potential here. However, his current empty .301 average with only 4 HRs isn't that impressive. Sell him if you can get something good in return.

thanks very much for your insight guys. certainly would rather have guys like lincecum, gallardo or bailey over maybes like maholm, bergmann or howell. it's tough in a 20 team league to get your hands on them since waiver priority moves slowly in a (yahoo H2H) league like this, and i used mine on billy butler.

i do agree with you drac that my pitching needs a major overhaul, with francis and a couple of the prospects like pelfrey and hochevar worth holding onto just to see what they will become.

thanks again to both of you.

all the best,

matt - dudelinger
