So I sent out an offer today and got a reply.
Derrek Lee / Justin Upton / 6th round draft pick
FOR
Brandon Webb / Hideki Matsui
Here's my roster as of today. I'm in a tight race for the top spot in the league (currently 2nd) and I lead the league in overall breakdown.
Russell Martin (C)
Derrek Lee (1B)
Justin Morneau (1B)
Lyle Overbay (1B)
Orlando Hudson (2B)
Mark DeRosa (1B, 2B, 3B, OF)
Alex Rodriguez (3B)
Jimmy Rollins (SS)
Jermaine Dye (OF)
Corey Hart (OF)
Magglio Ordonez (OF)
Eric Byrnes (OF)
Josh Willingham (OF)
Roy Oswalt
C.C. Sabathia
A.J. Burnett
Ian Snell
Ted Lilly
Jeff Suppan
Josh Johnson
Bartolo Colon
Ryan Dempster
Francisco Cordero
Jason Isringhausen
Kason Gabbard
This is a 8-player keeper league. 12 teams, H2H, ten categories (listed below).
Gabbard's pretty much my throw-in guy for the week and I picked up Overbay today to offset the possible loss of Lee. Burnett and Dempster are on my DL and Johnson is parked on my bench injured. I pretty much lead or am near the top of the league in the offensive categories (BA, HR, RBI, R, SB), but am average to below average in the pitching (ERA, WHIP, W, SV, K).
So the question: Is this a good deal to take? I'm thinking I can get her to accept a 7th or 8th round pick, but even if not, is that a good deal?
Thanks.

you definitely have some under performing pitchers on your roster, so webb would clearly be an upgrade. but, i'd like to know what FA options are there for pitchers before being sure that a move like this is the best way to improve your staff...
btw, you also didn't say what your starting positions are (vs bench slots) so i'm curious: what's up with DeRosa at MI or is that a bench spot? maybe try to get a decent 2b with a pitcher if you're going to give up a quality player like lee, plus prospect and draft pick? or maybe i'm worried about nothing since you're already doing well on the offensive side. (i love my martin, and just traded for hart. i can only dream of the dominance of a-rod)
overall decent deal that makes quite a lot of sense for your needs, but i don't quite give the full bore endorsement without knowing more on that roster question...
and good luck in that fight for 1st!

Good questions.
It's a daily league that starts C, 1B, 2B, 3B, SS, 3 OF, DH and 7 P. I use DeRosa primarily as a fill-in for off-days.
There's no limits to the amount of pitchers we can have within our 25-man roster as long as you can field the 9 offensive. Here are some of the FAs in my league right now.

ok, before i get burried too far here i should admit i haven't played a keeper league myself... but gad go get mcgowan! actually saw him in person smoking the A's a couple of weeks ago and he made them look silly. true, the A's haven't looked great vs very many pitchers this year, but TMR and others opened my eyes to mcgowan before i saw him. i'm sold (if that wasn't already clear). i also like marmol (cubs) since you probably don't feel like you're pushing the 7 pitchers limit very often. i might be overstating your flexibility but i'd say colon, suppan, and maybe johnson are all options to make room for the second of them (as you said, gabbard was just a temp add and i'd agree). lots of fans out there for the middle relievers in H2H leagues so maybe even pick another (even if gallardo has to be gone in a keeper, i'm assuming) for one of those vets not living up to expectations. i mean i don't think any of those guys are on your short list of keepers right?
ok... back to the trade:
the starting spots helps, thanks. and i should have asked, but based on the mixed output of willingham and dye I'm assuming d.lee has been a regular starter in the Utility spot (w/ morneau @ 1st). so without lee you'd be starting matsui, overbay, dye or willingham at the utility spot; this actually would have a potential of boosting your HR's but you'd take a hit in BA. sound about right? also you're hoping byrnes _doesn't_ implode the second half as history and the experts seem to point to as likely. though matzui covers that risk a bit... all seems like fair risk/reward.
and, any impact here on who you keep for next season?
i think you're fine with or without the trade in that respect if i guess you keep these:
Russell Martin (C)
Justin Morneau (1B)
Alex Rodriguez (3B)
Jimmy Rollins (SS)
C.C. Sabathia
Roy Oswalt
with one of: mags, hart, izzy or cordero (or mcgowan )
and either d.lee or Webb
last, who is Upton? i don't see him on your roster... do you have a separate listing for protected prospects?
so far i'm leaning towards you taking the trade, even if the price is a bit steep. but fair warning on the probably drop in BA... or maybe i'm just talking up the risks since i own d.lee and like him to have a better second half than 1st. honestly, it could be clouding my judgment...!

Yeah, Morneau/Lee filled out the DH spot. I went ahead and accepted the trade with a 7th round pick tossed in and the minors guys are protected on another roster. In this league, I'm not so tied to the minors, since we can only have two at anytime and they count towards your keepers at the end of the season.
I'm a writer covering a MiLB team, so I keep in tune that way.
As far as keepers go for next season, I was pondering that while driving around today. I'll have a decision to make because I think I have nine solid keepers right now.
Martin, Magglio, Webb, Oswalt, Sabathia, A-Rod, Rollins, Morneau and Cordero.
I was looking over our draft board (I had fifth) and I chose Julio Lugo over players like Beckett, Sheffield, Haren, Torii, Smoltz...this was my first baseball keeper, so I looked for need first (my dumb mistake).
Thanks for the help. The TMR boards helped me to my first championship ever (basketball this season) and I'm sure I'll make a good run this season.
