Hey everybody (that's still hanging around here),
I drew the last pick in my 14 team, PPR H2H Yahoo league (QB, 2RB, 3WR, TE, DEF, K). I was wondering if you guys had any helpful tips for picking at the turn of such a large league.
Normally, I would grab the two best RBs available. But I'm not sure any pairing of the backs available with my pickswould be a better choice than a top-tier wideout -- especially in a PPR league. I know I should grab one stud for sure, but shouldI pick up Steve Smith, Marvin Harrison or Chad Johnson with my other pick? After pick 15, I won't have another chance until pick 41 or 42!
I don't know much about PPR, as I've never played it before, but I imagine both posession receivers and running backs who play a big part in the passing game should move up on my draft board. For instance, if Reggie Bush is still there at 14, I'm taking him. But how much of a value increase should I give the top wideouts?
I'll throw some names out there. Here are the backs that may be available at the end ofthe first round, in the order that I've got them ranked:Reggie Bush (I hope), Willis McGahee, Ronnie Brown, Brandon Jacobs, Deuce McAllister, Thomas Jones, Cedric Benson. Is a 2 RB combo of any of these guys better for a PPR league than, say, McGahee and Harrison?
As always, I appreciate your insight.

Well I found the answer to at least the "How PPR affects WR values" part of my question:
You need to look at the dropoffs by position, not by points. Yes, Johnson is less valueable in a PPR league, but you are also assuming that the top WR get the most receptions which is not always the case. Andre Johnson led the league in receptions last year, Mike Furrey was second, Steven Jackson and Reggie Bush were in the top 10 -- non of those guys would have been considered a top WR. 20 players topped 1000 yards in 2005, 19 in 2006; all of those players had between 69 and 103 receptions, and last year 41 players had over 60 receptions. So, a point per receptions makes all receivers more valueable, and slightl;y increases the value of an elite WR over a non-elite one, but does not negate the value of running backs.
After all of that, that scoring format does make a Steve Smith or Chad Johnson a more valuable player for you than Rudi Johnson. The problem with taking WR early is their touches are dependant on other players -- their QB and O-Line -- while a starting running back will almost always get 25+ touches per game. There is also a perceived value issue to consider. If everyone thingks WR will be more valuable in your league they will draft WR earlier than normal making RB a value.
So, now that I completely forgot my point, I would move WR who will catch a lot of passes up a few slots on my cheat sheet, move RB who catch a lot of passes up a few, and move down RB who do not catch passes down. Whether I take a WR in the first 2 rounds would depend on who was available. I would like to, but there are some decent WR who will be more valuable than normal -- Coles for example -- because they catch a lot of passes for not so many yards. I actually think that PPR makes for more WR values later in the draft.
Thanks, C-Dub!

Like I mentioned in my other post, you will be able to find some WR bargains later in the draft. I would go with 2 RB there, if only to get it done with. If I could get 2 of Bush, Brown and Jones I would be real happy as I beleive all 3 will have more value in a PPR league than normal.

| Thanks again C-Dub. I should've read the premium section before posting, but I appreciate that you replied anyway.

| If Bush falls to your pick, wow, what a score for you! In a PPR league with 3 WRs, I'm not sure how you could not take at least one WR. I would be very happy with Chad or Steve Smith. HKP
